このようにして伝道の旅を続けること四十五年、
For forty-five years the Buddha went about the country preaching and persuading people to follow his way of life.
釈尊は八十歳を迎えた。
But when he was eighty,
ラージャグリハ(王舎城)からシュラーヴァスティー(舎衛城)に赴く途中、
at Vaisali and on his way from Rajagriha to Shravasti,
ヴァイシャーリーにおいて病を得、「三月の後に*混撃に入るであろう。」と予言された。
he became ill and predicted that after three months he would enter Nirvana.
さらに進んでパーヴァーに至り、
Still he journeyed on until he reached Pava
鍛治屋のチュンダの供養した食物にあたって病が悪化し、
where he fell seriously ill from some food offered by Chunda, a blacksmith.
痛みを押してクシナガラに入った。
Eventually, in spite of great pain and weakness, he reached the forest that bordered Kusinagara.
釈尊は城外のシャーラ(沙羅)樹の林に行き、シャーラの大木が二本並び立っている間に横たわった。
Lying between two large sala trees,
釈尊は懇ろに弟子たちを教え、最期のせつなまで教えを説いて
he continued teaching his disciples until his last moment.
世間の大導師たる仏としての仕事をなし終わり、静かに混繋に入った。
Thus he entered into perfect tranquillity after he had completed his work as the world's greatest teacher.
