5.
弟子たちよ、今はわたしの最期の時である。
"My disciples, my last moment has come,
しかし、この死は肉体の死であることを忘れてはならない。
but do not forget that death is only the end of the physical body.
肉体は父母より生まれ、食によって保たれるものであるから、
The body was born from parents and was nourished by food;
病み、傷つき、こわれることはやむを得ない。
just as inevitable are sickness and death.
仏の本質は肉体ではない。
But the true Buddha is not a human body:
さとりである。
肉体はここに滅びても、さとりは永遠に法と道とに生きている。
A human body must die, but the Wisdom of Enlightenment will exist forever in the truth of the Dharma, and in the practice of the Dharma.
だから、わたしの肉体を見る者がわたしを見るのではなく、
He who sees it is merely my body does not truly see me.
わたしの教えを知る者こそわたしを見る。
Only he who accepts my teaching truly sees me.
わたしの亡き後は、わたしの説き遣した法がおまえたちの師である。
After my death, the Dharma shall be your teacher.
この法を保ち続けてわたしに仕えるようにするがよい。
Follow the Dharma and you will be true to me.
弟子たちよ、わたしはこの人生の後半四十五年間において、
During the last forty-five years of my life,
説くべきものはすべて説き終わり、なすべきことはすべてなし終わった。
I have withheld nothing from my teachings.
わたしにはもはや秘密はない。
There is no secret teaching, no hidden meaning;
内もなく、外もなく、すべてみな完全に説きあかし終わった。
everything has been taught openly and clearly.
弟子たちよ、今やわたしの最期である。
My dear disciples, this is the end. In a moment,
わたしは今より涅槃に入るであろう。
I shall be passing into Nirvana.
これがわたしの最後の教戒である。
This is my instruction."
